Péter Esterházy’s novel Celestial Harmonies, a chronicle of the writer’s illustrious family and the last, tumultuous century of Hungarian history, has been nominated for the largest and most international literary prize, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
Esterházy’s novel – translated by Judith Sollosy – was nominated by the Helsinki City Library and the Leipzig City Library. On this year’s list 31 books out of the nominated 132 were originally written in languages other than English.
If the 100 thousand euro prize is given to a book originally not written in English, it will be shared between the author and the translator (75 and 25 thousand euros respectively). The shortlist will be published in April, the winner announced in June.
Previous winners include Javier Marías, Herta Müller, Andrew Miller, Michel Houellebecq, Orhan Pamuk and Tahar Ben Jelloun.
